Additional information about Nessie

The piece tells the story of Alistair MacLeod, a young trombonist from Stirling who spends his summers with his family in an old holiday house near Fort Augustus, on the shores of Loch Ness. One summer, Alistair discovers the notebooks of his late grandfather, Dr. Malcolm MacLeod, a scientist and amateur trombonist who believed that certain low frequencies, played in a precise order, could disturb the depths of the lake.

What begins as a childhood adventure gradually turns into a mysterious nocturnal ritual. Through the sound of the trombone, Alistair seems to awaken something hidden beneath the water: an ancient presence, half legend and half dream, emerging from the darkness of Loch Ness.

Nessie combines lyrical writing, dramatic gestures, and theatrical elements, inviting the performer to become both narrator and protagonist. The trombone represents Alistair’s voice, the echo of his grandfather’s research, and the call that reaches the unknown creature beneath the lake. The piece moves between innocence, suspense, humor, and mystery, creating a short musical tale in which the instrument becomes a bridge between the human world and the legendary depths.
